Sargasso porthole after initial cleaning. Marked as 'Smithsons Patent Porthole'. It has a ring
which revolves around the door locking it down in four places around its perimeter. Lifting the handle,
rotates the outer ring, which unlocks the door and allows it to be swung fully open.
It's a heavily machined piece of engineering and is showing significant signs of wear around the door hinge. I guess due to the cost of manufacture and the design faults, this idea didn't catch on. |
